In order to start a webtoon on platforms like Webtoon LINE Canva or Tapas you’ll want to make sure your webtoon is uploaded in individual files sized around 800px by 1280px
Webtoons are basically made up of individual comic pages that have 1-2 panels per file and then they are connected together vertically within mobile responsive sites like Webtoon and Tapas
You can start a webtoon using your smartphone and a pen stylus or mobile tablet and free art apps like ibispaint or medibang paint.
Here are 5 of my tips for supplies beginners to start a webtoon. I’ve learned alot about publishing webcomics online since 2010 so I want to share a little with you.
Which Stylus is best for Drawing?
I picked just a few that have websites that you can browse more stylus on their website. Here are a list of a few of my favorites beginner stylus and one that I found from a little research:
Now you don’t need a fancy pen stylus because a lot of free art apps like Jump Paint or ibispaint can be used with your finger as a pen stylus.
So my first tip is I would recommend you start with the simple bare basics. Buying those big beautiful fancy tablets isn’t necessary…..of course unless you want it but I digress because these are tips for how to start a webcomic as a beginner.
If you’re doing this comic creating thing as a hobby then you can save your money and use these starter tools instead.
I wish I knew this when I was younger then I could have saved myself from hoarding and never fully utilizing some of my more expensive art supplies and tools. Now you might be shocked by this but if you have a touchscreen phone then you can actually start a webcomic just with that.
You don’t have to worry about what’s the best most expensive stylus to use. Since you’re trying to start a webcomic as a hobby all you need is to find one that pairs with your phone and the art app of your choice and take those first steps.

Another reason why I wanted to buy certain programs and art tools was because that’s all I saw the others I looked up to using so I thought I had to use it.
I didn’t see anyone producing what I hoped to produce with free programs. I only saw them using the higher end programs which makes sense because they either had the funds or had a logical justification to buy that high end program or tool because they were gonna use it every day.
Now if you don’t have a computer don’t worry you can still create a webtoon!
I currently do the majority of my illustrations on my iPad pro (the mini can also work just fine for those with a tighter budget) with the apple pencil. Now I only have experience with the iPad tablet but I’ve seen reviews online about a few of these other tablets as well.
What are some free drawing apps to use to start a webtoon?
I used medibang paint to draw these illustration on my tablet but here are a few other free programs I recommend you check out if you’re just starting out making webcomics.
Now some of these I have personal experience using and the others I did a little research on and also recommend them because I feel they have the basic tools needed to start a webcomic
Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it’s inadequate. These are great apps to use to for you to start a webtoon!
Don’t let this program fool you because this is what I’ve been able to do with it for my illustrations and webcomics and webtoons are just tiny less detailed illustrations in panels. Layers are my best friend.
Now if you are looking to invest in a great art and comic program then I do suggest Clip Studio Paint! It’s one of my favorites software programs and I have been using it since 2010.
