3 Quick & Simple Tips on How to Make a Compelling Webtoon Story

Creating a webtoon can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to figure out how to make your story stand out. I’ve been there, too—wondering if my ideas are good enough or how to organize my thoughts.

That’s why I want to share my top three simple and quick tips. I’ve heard these from other webtoon artist peers. They help me make a compelling webtoon story.

Whether you’re working on a mobile device like an iPad Pro, these tips can guide you through the creative process. They can also solve some common challenges. The same applies if you are on a desktop computer.

Tip 1: Write Your Script in Dialogue-Only Screenplay Style

When I started, I struggled with figuring out how much detail to include in my script. Should I write it like a novel or focus just on dialogue? I realized that for solo creators, writing in a dialogue-only screenplay style can save a lot of time.

By focusing on dialogue, I avoid getting bogged down with descriptions of every little detail. Instead, I leave space to explore those details when drawing the panels. This method is especially helpful when working with a lot of visuals. These include free webtoon backgrounds or layering effects in programs like Medibang Paint, a great free choice to paid tools.

For example, if you’re using shojo manga techniques for emotional scenes, you can enhance the mood with visuals. Use visuals instead of lengthy descriptions.

Tip 2: Take It One Episode at a Time

Planning an entire webtoon all at once is tempting. Yet, this approach can quickly lead to burnout. This is especially true when you’re juggling tasks like image error messages. You also have to perfect your upload size. Additionally, deciding on the right canva size for your comic is important. That’s why I recommend focusing on one episode at a time.

I like to think of each webtoon episode as a mini-story. By completing one episode before moving on to the next, I avoid feeling overwhelmed. This approach lets me adjust my story as I go. Feedback from readers on Line Webtoon or another platform may show I need to tweak something.

Don’t forget: Once your episode is ready, you can use the publish button on your platform. Share it directly from a mobile app or your computer. Just make sure to double-check the individual image files for errors before uploading!

Tip 3: Use the 5W1H Method to Organize Your Story

When I’m planning my webtoon, I use the 5W1H method (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How). This problem-solving tool helps me map out what’s happening in my story and prevents me from getting stuck.

For example, if I’m designing a scene with a lot of action in a long vertical strip format, I’ll ask myself:

  • Who is the focus of the scene?
  • What action is taking place?
  • When does it happen?
  • Where is the scene set? (A good time to use free webtoon backgrounds!)
  • Why does it matter to the overall story?
  • How does the scene move the plot ahead?

Using this method keeps me focused, even when I’m working with lots of layers or creating intricate scenes. It also helps me manage my time better, whether I’m drawing on an iPad Pro or sketching on paper first.

Bonus: Common Beginner Webtoon Challenges and Mistakes I’ve learned

I know creating a webtoon isn’t just about the story. You might also wonder about the upload size for platforms like Line Webtoon. Additionally, you could consider how to design your comic pages for both desktop and mobile viewing.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Clip Studio Paint EX Story Editor Mode
  • Most platforms recommend keeping your canva size around 800px wide and up to 1280px long per slice for easy uploading. A lot of platforms now resize it for you. I like to draw on a larger canvas size and use multiple pages. The platforms resize it for me. They make it one long strip. I no longer worry if it will upload.
  • Use software like Clip Studio Paint EX store edit mode. Add your text to all of your pages in batches. This will help save on time.
  • Use comic specific programs like ibispiant or Medibang Paint. Take advantage of built-in free background resources and filters. These tools can help create your webtoon if you can’t afford clip studio paint. These are programs are a great free alternative to clip studio paint. They work on mobile devices and older model computers, laptops and tablets.
  • Use Webtoon Canva or Tapa’s preview feature when you upload your webtoon pages. This will help you make sure your comic looks great on a mobile device. Most readers view webtoons on their mobile devices.

If you’re running into issues like an image error, double-check your file format. JPEG or PNG usually works best. Make sure the file KB size meets platform requirements.

Number 1 Tip from Webtoon Artist: Perfectionism is the Enemy

If you’re like me, perfectionism can creep in and trigger artist’s block. You might worry about whether your story is good enough or if you’re obeying all the “rules” of webtoon creation. Let me remind you: there is no right or wrong way to create art.

Focus on what brings you joy. Your webtoon doesn’t have to be perfect to resonate with readers. Sometimes, simplicity and authenticity make the most impact.
