A Webtoon Artist Guide to Brainstorming Story Ideas

A Webtoon Artist Guide to Brainstorming Story Ideas

When I’m brainstorming webtoon comic ideas I will use the 5W1H method (who, what, when, where, why, how) or utilize retelling of my favorite fairytale or scene from a show or favorite story~

Have you ever read a great webtoon and wanted to write a webtoon of your own but one tiny thing was stopping you….the painful fact that you don’t know how to write a story….or maybe that’s just a struggle that I have.

Well this is where Pinterest comes into play! This is my go to site whenever I need to brainstorm fun webtoon story ideas!

Now I can understand how weird it is that I say that I can’t write a story because I have currently 4 books published and a handful of webtoons published online but trust me when I say that I still freeze up when it comes to writing a webtoon story.

Thankfully I’ve found a way to come up with story fun and creative webtoon story ideas! It’s now become my go to number one way to come up with story ideas and that’s to utilize pinterest!

Helpful Keywords to Brainstorm a Compelling Webtoon Story:

Whenever I feel a mental writing block or can’t figure out what story to write I usually turn to Pinterest.

On Pinterest I’m able to find a whole gold mind of webtoon story ideas and I create my own boards to save them on.

Here are a list of the story search terms that I usually research:

  • Alternative Universe prompts (a.k.a AU Prompts)
  • OC Prompts (Original Character Prompts)
  • OTP Prompt (One True Pairing Prompt)
  • Dialogue prompts
  • Scenario prompts
  • Story Prompts

Now I do want to add a disclaimer that you should never plagiarize (which is the act of taking someone else’s creation and passing it off as yours. i.e saying that you created the character Naruto when Kishimoto was the one that created the character.)

There is a difference between plagiarism and getting inspiration but I won’t go into detail about that right now, just keep it as a rule of thumb that we all get inspiration from everywhere which is why there is nothing new under the sun.

So don’t go taking someone else’s apple pie and say that you created that apple pie, instead get inspired by their apple pie and create your own apple cinnamon pie or apple crumb pie.

I’m learning more each day just how awesome Pinterest really is for webtoon creators and writers alike! What are some of the ways you guys go about figuring our webtoon story ideas when you can’t think up anything?

What should you do next?
